Through the landscapes of the West Region of Portugal, it is common to see windmills, many of them in ruins, but full of history, as their existence was once the way of living of many families!

In Amoreira you can find two amazing windmills and a thematic route dedicated to them.

You can take the Mills Route while discoveing Amoreira, a historic village that, in ancient times, even rivaled with the medieval village of Óbidos in terms of its regional relevance, making it worth visiting and getting to know it!

Start the route by visiting the beautifull Nossa Senhora da Aboboriz Church, before going to the former Escola Primaria da Amoreira, which currently functions as a library, music library and exhibition space. Continue to the Praça Dr Azeredo Perdigão, next to the town ancient fountain, where you will find next to it one of the oldest and most distinctive buildings in this village, namely the Alcaidaria-Mor building. Continuing through the village, pass the Mina de Água and the weir and then go to the “Parque do Rio”or River Park by the town waterfalls, where you can find the perfect conditions to play sports and enjoy leisures area, with picnic tables and a diferent sports playgrounds.

Continue the route towards the Chapel of Jesus Maria José, turning left towards the EN114, where you will find the beginning of the Amoreira eco-track, taking you to the factory of Vila das Rainhas, Ginja de Óbidos, where you can visit and delight yourself with the famous and best cherry liqueur from Óbidos.

Then, to go to the windmills, you'll have to go back along the eco-track towards the Village, climbing along pine forests, vineyards and orchards, towards the top of the beautiful Amoreira mountain range, where you'll find the windmills and a privileged view to the entire Amoreira valley.

To return to the historic center of Amoreira, we recommend a descent along tracks and paths, towards the “Guarita” and “Casa dos Seixos, a centenary historic building with very characteristic features. And, of course, to finish the route in the best possible way, nothing better than putting your palate to the test and enjoying a delicious meal at Taberna Viracopos accompanied by a good wine!
